About

Jessica Stuart Few in a field

The Jessica Stuart Few is like Stereolab throwing a party with Joanna Newsom and Erykah Badu. At Led Zeppelin’s house.  In Japan.

Toronto’s Jessica Stuart is “a brand new voice on the (Toronto) music scene” (Garvia Bailey, CBC Radio 1) – while the surging rhythms are clearly rooted in the improvisational give-and-take of modern jazz and progressive folk, Stuart seamlessly “..melds the best of both.., packing the songs full of musical ideas that veer in unexpected directions.” (Tabassum Siddiqui, Spinner Canada)

Toronto based jazz-influenced art-folk trio, The Jessica Stuart Few, have a sound that’s both new and old, whimsical and sincere, and rooted in a rich tradition while jumping head-first towards the future. A uniquely gifted guitarist equally adept on KOTO (a 13-string traditional Japanese floor harp), Jessica formed The ‘Few in 2007 with Charlie Haden-inspired double bass ace Dan Fortin (Serena Ryder) and propulsive percussionist Nico Dann (Tune-Yards). Since then, The Jessica Stuart Few has become a very busy band, spending a lot of time on the road, with around 100 shows in the past year alone including performances at NXNE, TD Toronto Jazz Festival, Vancouver Chutzpah! Festival, and the Brampton Indie Arts Festival while earning invites to showcase at Canadian Music Week and Pennsylvania’s Millennium Music Conference in 2012.

2010 saw the release of The Few’s debut full-length album, Kid Dream, a critically-acclaimed collection of songs co-produced by Mischa Chillak (K-OS, Notes To Self) that brilliantly capture the band’s youthful energy and Jessica’s one-of-a-kind vision. The follow-up, Two Sides To Every Story, is in the production phase, and is scheduled for a 2012 release. With a bright future on the horizon, The Jessica Stuart Few continues to win over the media, the arts community and an ever-growing fan base with their unique sound, charisma and creativity as the next generation of Independent music.

“The Few meld their undeniable pop instincts with a playful non-linear approach to jazz and crank up the charm.” – Bob Klanac, London Scene Magazine
