Colour Photos from 1910

Yep, I can barely believe it, but, for true – the following colour photographs of the Russian Empire were taken between 1909-1912 by photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii, with the support of Tzar Nicholas II.  A specialized camera was used, taking a quick succession of black & white photographs which were then recombined later with red, green and blue filters, and projected with a lantern to get the full colour spectrum.  Incredible!  (Thanks E.S. for the share!)

The Russian Empire a century back included modern day Turkey, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and more.  To see many more of these fantastic images CLICK HERE.

More than one way to spin a CD

Who knows what the near future of the CD will be?  Well, they’re more useful than a tape or an 8-track, but less than a record (lasts longer, better sound), but the digital music world is certainly the most appealing to the broadest audience these days.  Sean E Avery has chosen the CD (and other electronic stuff sometimes) to be the material for his animal art collection. Checkity:

sean-e-avery-hummingbird Hummingbird (CD shards, wire mesh)

sean-e-avery-rhino Rhino (old hard drives, wire mesh)

sean-e-avery-rat Rat (CD shards, wire mesh, toy wiggle snake)

Pretty neato, and the rhino’s my fave.  IN OTHER CD NEWS, a great Toronto indie band, The Elwins, have released their brand new full-length album, And I Thank You today! It is absolutely worth checking out – here is the link to the album on Bandcamp.

Family Day Love

Thanks to all who participated in yesterday’s “name that Toronto landmark & win a download of Kid Dream contest.  The winner was Matt Rubel who correctly identified the first photo as the Triad sculpture at the Front/University/York intersection – the second photo was the unfinished wall at track level at Union Station.

FAMILY DAY! I’m new to it (or vice versa) as a BC girl, but I hear that starting from 2013, BC will be joining the Family Day train alongside much of the rest of this country.  It’s not easy to get along well with the fam all the time, and many of us don’t even live close by our families, but one way or the other, given, or chosen family, we need each other, so let’s try to cut each other some slack, ok?  tiger-with-piglets (If tigers and pigs can make it work, so can we)

Here’s a perfectly themed beautiful song, “Still” by Alan Hampton performed on Gretchen Parlato‘s latest album The Lost and Found:

Happy Family Day!

How well do you know your Toronto?

As I mentioned yesterday, I went to a great JPEC presented show (Jazz Performance Education Centre) on Friday night at the Glenn Gould Studio, and the stand out act was Peripheral Vision.   Before I share some live video clips of the quartet, it’s time to play… How Well Do You Know Your Toronto? The first person to name the location of either of the following photos, will win a free download of Kid Dream! - comments below this post, on facebook, or replies on twitter will all count.

SO now for some live clips of two tunes Peripheral Vision played on Friday night – mind you, these vids are from other shows in Victoria, BC and Toronto respectively:

Post Art

So this week The JSFew was supposed to be in the US playing shows and attending a music conference, and as you might have heard, it was cancelled at the last minute.  I’m happy to say that the week was/is filled with awesomeness, and me makes me feel better about it- played with BlueVenus in the Beaches, hosted a new open mic at On Cue Billiards (Jane/Bloor), saw a fantastic performance by Peripheral Vision last night at the Glenn Gould (will post more on this tomorrow) and am headed into the studio tomorrow morning with Countermeasure Acappella. Never a dull moment, doing this musician thing, that’s for certain!

Today’s cool stuff: I’m a big fan of using unlikely materials for art projects – today: the Post-It note! post-it-phoenix-best a 3D phoenix! (artist unknown)

post-it-elvis-best Elvis, By Charles Mangin (apparently over 2500 post-its used in this one)
And finally – this is the awesome sauce, right here:

Enjoy the weekend, and stay dry.

3-2-1 Contact & the synth..

We’re gearing up for a great live video recording session next week! YES- we’re on the fence about whether we should do a special invite to our a few of our fans to come observe the performance and be in the video – what do YOU think? (comment space below or facebook/twitter)

IT’s time for a real throwback: 3-2-1 Contact!

And just for fun, check out this “high-tech” segment 3-2-1 Contact did on synthesizers featuring ‘synthesist’ Suzanne Ciani: No embed code for this, just click here!

Sweet & Juicy

It’s love day!  Just the same as any other really, but why not use any excuse to share a hug or a smooch with a friend? Well, the following video is by an incredible artist, Miss Emily Brown with whom the JSFew has had the chance to share the stage – although not a Valentine’s themed song in any way, this girl does it from the heart, so it makes sense to me.

Enjoy, make someone smile, and may your day be sweet, juicy and refreshing… lovewatermelon

Red Green Blue

ALL about red, blue and green today…

red-green-blue-dots Did you know that these dots make up all of the colours you see on your computer?  By adjusting each colour to one of its 256 intensity levels and combining them with each other, they can create over 16 million different colour possibilities!

red-green-blue-art-shapes Piece by Ellsworth Kelly, American painter & sculptor, 1960′s.  Kelly was born in the 20′s.

red-green-blue-apples If I cooked or sewed more, I’d make this textile into a great apron..

red-green-blue-flowers Tulips & hyacinths make a natureful red, green and blue.

I’mma gonna go to The Emmet Ray tonight to see Peripheral Vision. You? Killer modern jazz quartet + whiskey galore= happy.

Valentine’s Flash Mob @Indigo

I sing with a great vocal group called Countermeasure Acappella and book giants, Indigo/Chapters enlisted our help to do a memorable Valentine’s campaign.  Just for fun, here is the final cut of the vid. (can you find me in there all dancey & singy?)

Performing at The Rex tonight (Sunday) from 7-9pm – no cover charge.  The band I’m playing with, The Offbeat, does unique jazz/bossa arrangements of unlikely cover material from grunge to 90′s dance hits to classic rock with some originals thrown in as well.  A really fun and awesome band!

Have a good Sunday,
